Teroldego: A Staff Favorite

October 16, 2024

Suhru TeroldegoWithout a doubt, Suhru Teroldego is a Staff Favorite at Suhru & Lieb Vineyards.  Of course the wine is delicious—and our visitors love trying it and taking it home.  But, because Teroldego is not a common grape in the United States, it’s the ‘nicknames’ we hear from our guests that we love the most!

We’ve heard everything from ‘that wine that sounds like Talladega Nights’ to ‘the Pterodactyl wine’ to ‘that T wine’ to ‘Tero? Tero?  You know the one!’ — We sure do know the one!

So, what is Teroldego?

Teroldego (pronounced:tehr-AWL-deh-go) is a grape that hails from the northern part of Italy.  It’s known for having very dark skin that translates into a beautiful inky wine with lovely supple tannins.  Those tannins are offset by a fresh red fruitiness and a finish that’s reminiscent of warm baking spices.

Only 4% of it is grown outside of Italy—our cool maritime climate here on the North Fork is a perfect match for this grape!  Suhru & Lieb Vineyards is currently cultivating 3 acres on our Southold vineyard property which we use to make Suhru’s single varietal Teroldego which we age in American Oak to play off those skin tannins and showcases the fruitiness of the wine.

Both these wines pair beautifully with tomato sauce based pasta dishes and tangy barbecue meats.  Even if you can’t remember how to pronounce the wine—our team will know which one you mean!
