There’s something about the North Fork that feels made for a girls weekend.
Maybe it’s the combination of vineyard-lined roads, farm-to-table restaurants, waterfront villages, great coffee, local shops, and tasting rooms. Or perhaps it’s simply that the North Fork gives you permission to slow down for a couple of days.
While summer gets plenty of attention, fall and winter are some of our favorite times to plan a North Fork girls weekend. The crowds thin out, tasting rooms feel a little more relaxed, restaurant reservations become easier to find, and chilly afternoons provide an excellent excuse to settle in over a long lunch or another glass of wine.
Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, planning a reunion, or simply overdue for a weekend away with friends, here’s how we’d spend a girls weekend on the North Fork.
Where you stay can shape the entire weekend, so start by deciding what kind of trip you want.
If your priority is walking to restaurants, bars, coffee, and shopping, Greenport makes an excellent home base. The village offers a range of hotels and inns, and staying downtown means you can park the car after a day exploring wine country. Greenport’s lodging options range from small inns to boutique hotels.
For a stylish boutique stay right in town, consider The Menhaden. If your group would rather wake up by the water, Silver Sands Motel & Beach Bungalows offers accommodations on a waterfront property just outside the village.
However, a rental house or cottage can be an even better choice for a girls weekend. Having a kitchen, living room, and common space gives everyone somewhere to gather over coffee in the morning or another bottle of wine at the end of the night.
Local tip: For groups of four or more, a rental home often makes a lot of sense. Everyone gets more room to spread out, and you have a comfortable place to spend the evening if no one feels like going back out.
Don’t over-plan Friday.
If you’re coming from New York City or western Long Island, traffic can make arrival times unpredictable. Instead, check into your accommodations, unpack, and ease into the weekend.
If you’re staying near Mattituck, take a walk down Love Lane before dinner. It’s a small downtown, but that’s part of the charm. Grab a bite at Love Lane Kitchen or browse the nearby shops before settling in for the evening.
If you’re staying farther east, head into Greenport. Walk around the village, explore the shops, and have dinner before heading back to your hotel or rental.
The goal isn’t to squeeze an extra tasting into Friday night. Save the wineries for tomorrow.
Every good girls weekend should start with good coffee.
If you’re staying in the central North Fork, head to North Fork Roasting Co. in Southold. It’s an easy way to start the morning before heading out for the day.

Most importantly, don’t schedule your first wine tasting too early. Give everyone time to wake up, eat something substantial, and enjoy the morning. Wine country isn’t a race.
Once everyone is properly caffeinated, it’s time for wine.
For groups, reservations are well worth making—even during the quieter months. They give the winery time to prepare for your group and mean you spend less of your weekend waiting for tables.
We recommend giving yourself about 90 minutes to enjoy your tasting rather than rushing through it.
Start with sparkling wine, explore something you haven’t tried before, order a few bites for the table, and actually enjoy being together.
That’s what a wine-country weekend should feel like.
One of the easiest ways to ruin a North Fork girls weekend is to turn Saturday into a tasting-room marathon.
You don’t need five wineries. Two or three thoughtfully chosen stops will almost always make for a better day.
Give yourself roughly 90 minutes at each tasting room and leave at least 30 minutes between reservations. That creates time for driving, photos, shopping, or the inevitable moment when everyone decides they’re not quite ready to leave.
It also means you’re tasting wine rather than simply checking wineries off a list.
Don’t treat lunch as something you squeeze between tastings.
The North Fork’s food culture is one of the best reasons to visit. Local oysters, seafood, vegetables, cheeses, breads, and other ingredients make food an essential part of the wine-country experience.
Depending on your plans, you could build the afternoon around a winery offering food, stop for a casual lunch, or make lunch itself one of the major reservations of the day.
Then head to your final winery afterward. By late afternoon, you’ll probably be ready to slow down anyway.
This is an underrated girls-weekend move.
Instead of going directly from your final tasting to dinner, give yourselves a break.
Head back to the house or hotel. Put your feet up. Change for dinner. Open something you picked up during the day and recap everyone’s favorite wine. Then go back out.

Alternatively, head into Greenport and make an evening of it. Dinner followed by a walk around town gives the trip a different rhythm from spending the entire day at wineries.
Don’t rush home Sunday morning.
Sleep in a little, find brunch or coffee, and give yourself a few hours to enjoy the North Fork without a tasting schedule.
This is a great time to explore Greenport, Love Lane, local boutiques, farm stands, antique shops, and specialty food stores.
Late fall also gives the weekend a completely different feel. Farm stands transition toward apples, squash, pies, preserves, holiday greenery, and local gifts. Small downtowns become quieter, and shopping feels much less frantic than it does during peak summer weekends.
If everyone still has energy, you can add one final winery before heading home. But you certainly don’t have to.
Sometimes brunch, coffee, and a slow drive home are exactly right.
This is one part of the weekend you should plan before anyone arrives.
If you’re visiting several wineries, designate a driver or arrange transportation in advance.

However, check winery transportation policies before booking. Many North Fork tasting rooms restrict buses, limousines, sprinters, or other large vehicles.
The best North Fork weekends tend to have just enough structure.
Book your accommodations, Saturday dinner, transportation, and winery reservations ahead of time. Then leave some open space around them.
For a group of four or more, winery reservations are especially important. Even a same-day reservation can make a big difference.
Also remember that distances can be deceiving. The North Fork looks compact on a map, but weekend traffic and two-lane roads can turn a short drive into a much longer one. Grouping your stops geographically will make the entire day feel easier.
Finally, check seasonal hours before your trip. Late fall and winter schedules can differ considerably from summer hours.
Summer on the North Fork is beautiful. But late fall has its own appeal.
The pace slows down after harvest. Fires start appearing in fireplaces and outdoor fire pits. Red wine sounds particularly good again. Restaurants feel cozy instead of crowded, and tasting-room conversations have a little more room to breathe.
You can spend Saturday tasting wine without fighting peak-season crowds, linger over dinner, and wake up Sunday without feeling like you need to beat everyone else to the next destination.
For a girls weekend built around catching up rather than checking boxes, that slower pace may be exactly what you’re looking for.
A great North Fork girls weekend doesn’t require an elaborate itinerary.
