What’s in a Name? The Story Behind Lieb Estate Meritage

November 6, 2024

Meritage

We wine nerds love our French words! We’ll sprinkle in terms like terroir, veraison, and méthode champenoise whenever possible. But despite its elegant ring, the name of the Lieb Estate Meritage doesn’t come from France at all. Instead, it comes from the American-based Meritage Alliance—and here’s the story.

Back in 1988, a group of forward-thinking American vintners came together to form what was then called the Meritage Association (today, the Meritage Alliance). Their goal was simple: to recognize and promote handcrafted wines made in the tradition of Bordeaux blends. The word Meritage itself was invented by combining merit and heritage, symbolizing both the quality of the grapes and the centuries-old art of blending. And here’s a fun fact—it rhymes with heritage!

So what exactly makes a Meritage? By definition, the wine must be a blend of at least two of the classic Bordeaux grape varieties. At Lieb Estate, our Meritage brings together Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Each grape contributes its own character: Merlot adds plush fruit, Cabernet Sauvignon delivers structure, Cabernet Franc layers in spice, Malbec lends depth, and Petit Verdot offers color and intensity.

The result is a rich, complex red that’s built to age. Notes of dark chocolate, black fruit, and a touch of earthiness give this wine depth and intrigue. With a little patience in the cellar, those flavors will continue to evolve into something even more nuanced and rewarding.

Whether you open it for a special dinner, tuck it away for a future celebration, or simply enjoy it on a cozy evening at home, Lieb Estate Meritage represents both a nod to Bordeaux tradition and the unique expression of Long Island wine country.
